Hypermedia was a term coined by Ted Nelson but deviates from his original idea. I see hypermedia today as a non-sequential medium that mixes graphics, audio, video, plain text, and hyperlinks. It is different from multi-media in that multi-media is non-interactive and progresses in a sequential format. Hypermedia is interactive and the user progresses in the format he/she wants creating an individualized sequential format. But just what does hypermedia mean to me? While reading the article “The Institute for Learning Technologies: Pedagogy for the 21st Century” I came to believe in the constructivist theory described. In summation, the theory believes in the student-as-worker. Another article that helped to define what hypermedia means to me is a website titled “Three Levels of Hypermedia in Education.” I believe hypermedia needs to be closer to level 3, to break society’s ties and allow the student to have a say in his/her learning. This, in essence, is what I feel hypermedia means, allowing the learner to make their own connections and choices in regards to how they will learn a skill, concept, idea, or theme. In evaluating myself on hypermedia I need to look at where I began. I would not have been able to answer the question “what is hypermedia?” 3 months ago. But now I believe that not only can I answer the question in an educated manner, but I am also capable of producing several hypermedia products to demonstrate my knowledge. Does that mean that I have nothing else to learn? No, I will continue to learn as new technology is developed. But now I can proudly say I am a hypermedia connoisseur.
